UFC CEO Dana White aired bad news recently by announcing that the much-awaited bout between Stipe Miocic (20-4 MMA, 14-4 UFC) and Jon Jones (27-1 MMA, 21-1 UFC) will no longer hold due to the latter’s getting injured during a training session.

Jones collected the heavyweight belt after the departure of the UFC’s former number one, Francis Ngannou, when Ngannou decided to dump the UFC for greener pastures in the boxing arena. The situation was born after a contract between Ngannou and the UFC failed to take place. Ngannou alleged that the treatment he was getting from the company was not satisfactory, signing a one-fight contract that will pay him more than he has ever earned in all his fights at the UFC instead.

Jon Jones (Jonathan Dwight Jones) is an American mixed martial artist and is considered to be one of the greatest fighters in the history of the sport. He was born on July 19, 1987, in Rochester, NY. He stands at a height of 6 feet 4 inches and weighs 250 lbs.

The fighter is not a stranger to injuries. In 2013, he suffered a dislocated toe while fighting with Chael Sonnen at UFC 159. Despite the injury, he continued to fight and won the bout. In 2015, Jones suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his left knee during a training session.

This injury led to the cancellation of his scheduled title defence against Daniel Cormier at UFC 197. Jones also dealt with eye-related issues. In 2019, he suffered corneal abrasions during his fight against Thiago Santos at UFC 239. He also had a previous eye issue in 2012, when he was diagnosed with a detached retina.

This time around, due to an unnamed training exercise, the champion’s title defence has again been cancelled due to a pectoral muscle injury. Such injuries likely occur when the muscles in the chest region are put under more stress than they can endure.

The pectoral muscle, also called pecs, consists of four main muscles: pectoralis major, pectoralis minor, serratus anterior, and subclavius. These muscles play a crucial role in the movement and stability of the upper limb and the rotation of the arm and are associated with strong training exercises like bench presses and push-ups.

Since Jones and Miocic will not be fighting, Sergei Pavlovich (18-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) and Tom Aspinall (13-3 MMA, 6-1 UFC) will contest for the UFC heavyweight title in their place for an interim champion to give Jones time to heal. Jones will always challenge the reigning champion on his return to claim his title.
