The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was rejected from the list of favourite candidates for the 2023 Ballon d’Or awards, an incident that made a lot of headlines. A look at the difference between the milestones reached by nominees for the award, which included Lionel Messi has the ability to convince knowledgeable eyes that Cristiano Ronaldo is quite behind. But there are controversies surrounding Messi’s likelihood of winning this year’s award after it was extensively announced that Lionel Messi had been told he was to win this year’s award. Many think the better option should be Haaland.

‘What Haaland did last season can’t be overlooked,’ said Newcastle’s Callum Wilson. ‘If you take away international football and compare statistically…

‘Haaland should win the award. You can’t look past Messi winning his first World Cup as it’s a big contributing factor, but club football-wise he’s been playing in America which is very different to Haaland in the Premier League.’

After Ronaldo’s Al Nassr beat Quatar’s Al-Duhail by 4-0 at the AFC Champions League on Tuesday, Ronaldo posted a congratulatory message to his club on Instagram. The star scored two goals in the match and assisted one, and he is the highest goal scorer for the year.

‘I don’t care much about records,’ Cristiano Ronaldo said. ‘I’m just thinking about enjoying it at the moment. Our team is improving from one match to another. Our coach and the technical staff are making a great effort to make Al-Nasr the strongest team.

‘I am happy that I scored goals and performed well, but Chris is different from others. I work well, and in the end what I achieve comes with the help of my colleagues and the technical staff and most importantly, I am having fun at the moment and helping Al-Nasr and the Portuguese team.’

Lionel Messi recently said he did not care about personal records either, saying he preferred those having to do with group victories. That included winning competitions in collaboration with both club and country and reaching other group milestones.

‘I have said it many times, the Ballon d’Or is very important due to the recognition at an individual level, but I never gave it importance,’ announced Messi.

‘The most important thing for me was always the awards at the group level. I was lucky to have achieved everything in my career and after the World Cup, I’m thinking about that award much less, my biggest award was that (the World Cup).

‘If it (the Ballon d’Or) arrives, good, and if not, nothing happens. I was lucky to achieve all my goals in my career and now I have new goals with this club.’

Some netizens think Cristiano Ronaldo was alienated by the West and Europe and that his decision to go to Saudi Arabia and the door it opened were the reasons. There are presently two places where a young footballer dreams to spend his career time: Europe and Saudi Arabia. Cristiano Ronaldo added the second option to the list, and some think that Europe was not very pleased, but all their assumptions are based on mere speculations.
